Understanding the welcome tax

Land transfer duties in Quebec

The welcome tax is the common name for the land transfer duties charged in Quebec when you buy a property. It is paid in addition to the purchase price and is separate from GST/QST. The amount depends on the transaction price and any municipal surtaxes.

The duties are payable at closing and must be settled within 30 days of the deed, per the terms set by your notary and the municipality.

First-time buyers: exemptions or rebates may apply depending on your situation, the property type, the value, and the active programs. Rules change. Confirm eligibility with your notary, Revenu Québec, and the municipality.

Important notice: this calculator gives an indicative estimate based on the brackets shown. It does not replace an official calculation, a municipal decision, or legal or tax advice.
